Looking for high-protein meal prep ideas you can make once and enjoy all week long? This BBQ Chicken-inspired dense bean salad is packed with black beans, smoky chipotle BBQ chicken, and a creamy high-protein ranch, making it ideal for easy lunches you can eat straight from the fridge.

When I was a kid, if my parents asked what I wanted for dinner, more often than not, my answer was Stonefire Grill, specifically so I could get their BBQ Chicken Salad. It was a full-on obsession that lasted for years, and honestly, I still think about it.

So this recipe is a bit of an ode to that salad. It takes everything I loved about a classic BBQ chicken salad, the smoky chicken, crunchy veggies, and creamy dressing, and turns it into a dense bean salad that keeps well in the fridge all week long.

By adding black beans for fiber and protein, loading it up with crisp vegetables, and tossing everything in a high-protein ranch, this version eats like a real meal. It’s the kind of thing you can prep once, keep in the fridge, and happily eat all week long.

Tips & Variations

  • Gluten-free: This recipe is naturally gluten-free. Just double check that your BBQ sauce and chipotle peppers in adobo are certified gluten-free.
  • Dairy-free: Swap the Greek yogurt for all mayonnaise for a dairy-free ranch. Or use BBQ sauce to dress the salad instead of ranch.
  • Swap the protein: This salad works well with rotisserie chicken, grilled shrimp, or BBQ tofu.
  • No grill? Bake the chicken in the oven or cook it on a grill pan until cooked through, then chop and proceed as directed.

Storage & Meal Prep

Store the salad in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.

This salad holds up especially well since the beans and sturdy vegetables don’t wilt or get soggy.

For the best texture, give it a quick toss before serving.

You can also store the dressing separately and mix just before eating if you prefer a slightly fresher crunch, but it’s not required.

Can I use store-bought ranch?

You can, but the homemade high-protein ranch keeps this salad more filling and better aligned with the dense bean salad idea.

Love this as a quick lunch meal prep. Everyone that has tried it has liked it. Not usually a fan of the red cabbage but in this I like it. Added red pepper and only had one can black beans so subbed one for garbonzo beans.
